Columbus Landings is a residential subdivision on the south end of San Salvador and encompasses sections 1, 2, 3, and 4. Many lots have been sold since 1973 and less than a hundred families, including both local and second homeowners, have built homes and are enjoying island life in the community.
Following the closure of the U.S. naval facility on San Salvador, a Florida-based development company acquired a large tract of land with the intention of creating a major residential community. The vision included hundreds of residential lots, new roads, utilities, and an 18-hole golf course. Lots were marketed throughout the United States, often through direct sales presentations, and many were purchased for prices starting around $5,000.
Before the project was fully completed, the original Florida developer was acquired by another company that decided it no longer wished to continue operations in The Bahamas. Around that time, a new company assumed responsibility for marketing and selling lots.
Over time, additional changes in management and corporate structure created uncertainty regarding who controlled various aspects of Columbus Landings. Hilton Ferguson is president of Columbus Landings today, and lot sales continues under his administration. Prospective purchasers should rely on independent legal advice.
Despite its somewhat complicated history, many Columbus Landings properties have perfectly good title, and buyers continue to purchase and build homes throughout the subdivision. However, each property should be evaluated on its own merits. Some parcels have straightforward ownership histories. Others may require additional investigation. For that reason, a thorough title search by a qualified Bahamian attorney is essential before completing any purchase.
As someone who has worked with buyers and sellers on San Salvador for a few years, my advice is simple:
